INFORMATION FOR PROSPECTIVE
STUDENTS
Thank you for you interest in the percussion
programme at the Canberra School of Music. The CSM Percussion Program
focuses on the fundamentals of percussion performance including Orchestral
Repertoire,Contemporary Repertoire (Percussion Ensemble), World Music's
and Jazz.
All students must qualify by audition for acceptance to
the Canberra School of Music. Auditions are normally scheduled in
December; however, students may audition at any time throughout the year
by appointment. All applicants should prepare solo recital material at an
appropriate level or solo/etude on the following: snare drum,
mallets, timpani, multi percussion or drum set.
The
audition will also consist of sight-reading on snare drum and mallets.
This audition is important for both scholarship and teaching stipend
considerations. Below is a partial list of suggestions for audition
material; although, HSC, TEE, AMEB and Trinity College Exam materials are
all acceptable.
You should bring your own sticks, mallets, music,
and arrange for an accompanist, if needed. Students may bring their own
instruments or use any of the following CSM instruments.

- SNARE DRUM:
Rudiments: 40 PAS rudiments. Solos:
snare drum solo/etude demonstrating adequate
proficiency. Suggested etude repertoire: 12 Studies for Snare
Drum by Jacques Delecluse, published by Alphonse Leduc. Portraits in
Rhythm, Cirone, Belwin Mills 150 Snare Drum Solos, Wilcoxon, Ludwig
Publishing Orchestral Excerpts (optional)
- TIMPANI:
Fundamentals: tuning, intervals, intonation, and
tone production. Solos: timpani solo (including tuning)
demonstrating adequate proficiency Suggested etude repertoire:
Freise Lepak Timpani Method, 3 and 4 Drum Tuning exercises, Belwin
Mills. Goodman Timpani Method, Belwin Mills. Peters Timpani
Method, Alfred Publishing. Orchestral Excerpts (optional)
- KEYBOARD PERCUSSION:
Scales and Arpeggios: two octave
scales and arpeggios major and minor. Suggested etude
repertoire: 4-mallet work of sufficient length and difficulty,
which demonstrates ability suitable for a year 12 music recital. Two
mallet work: Modem School for Marimba / Xylophone by Morris Goldenberg,
published by Chappell. Green, Ragtime Solos. Orchestral Excerpts
(optional)
- MULTI PERCUSSION:
Solo: A multiple percussion solo
demonstrating adequate proficiency on a range of
instruments. Suggested repertoire: Feldstein, Advanced Multi
Solos, Udow Multi Solos, Kraft, French Suite, Kraft Morris Dance,
Gatano, Episode No. 1
- DRUM SET
Various styles and chart reading. Essential
